First bus traps man under Staples
A MAN suffered chest, head and facial injuries when he became trapped under a bus. The accident happened as the single-decker crashed through the fence between the First Worcester bus depot and Staples in George Street, Worcester, just after 7.30am.
Firefighters had to cut through the fence to free the man – who works at the bus depot – before ambulance staff could treat him. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews arrived on scene to find a man trapped by a metal fence after a bus had collided with the barrier.
“The man in his 60s suffered chest, head and facial injuries. He received emergency treatment at the scene while being extricated and was transferred by ambulance to Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Worcester.”
Jo Daniels, from Staples, saw the aftermath of the crash when she arrived at work. She said: “I pulled up and it had already happened and there was a guy on the phone to the emergency services.
Shortly afterwards, a doctor car came and the ambulance and two fire engines. When I got out of the car to come to the door I could see there were people down the side of the bus. There were a couple of people with the man who was lying on the floor. The bus was completely through the fence on Staples’ car park.”
Two fire engines from Worcester and the Incident Support Unit from Droitwich joined police and paramedics at the scene. Crew Commander Lee Smith, from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The man was trapped under the fence and the bus, and firefighters had to cut away the fence to release him.”
The man was released by about 8.20am. The man’s injuries were said to be non life-threatening. A spokesman from First said police were investigating along with an accident investigation team from The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency. He said: “The exact cause of the incident is currently unknown and First are assisting the police and accident teams with their investigations.”
