PALM near Agricultural College
At approximately 7pm on 4th May 2012 Dr Graeme Spencer of CSI BASICS was mobilised to a road traffic crash near Reaseheath Agrictural College just off the A51 outside Nantwich. A male driver in early twenties in a Honda Civic had impacted into tree on a country road. The force of the massive impact into front passenger seat area had intruded the bodywork almost to the midline.
There was also evidence of impact on the roof as well. The casualties head injury was clearly apparent but there was also significant risk to the spine, chest and pelvis.
With the roof approximately 20 cm from the casualties head, Dr Spencer secured the airway using the PALM technique. Following extrication it was then possible for an anaesthetic colleague to perform a formal RSI in the ambulance, and the casualty was then transferred and then enabled direct transfer to the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary with its neurosurgical facilities.
