BASICS team in Haiti

Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti four BASICS members have deployed with the  United Kingdom International Search and Rescue Team(UKISAR), they are Dr John Darcy (the medical team leader) and Drs Rob Dawes, Nick Maskery and nurse John Taylor.

The UKISAR is the official UK government search and rescue team and responds to natural disasters at the request of HMG and is composed of rescue specialists drawn from across the UK. Designated by the UN as a  ‘Heavy Rescue Team’  (indeed it was the first team to receive such certification), it deploys with a capability to provide heavy search and rescue simultaneously at two independent sites and to provide pre-hospital care to the  injured until the victim is handed over to local facilities.

To date UKISAR teams including their medical support drawn from BASICS members have deployed to Montserrat, Mozambique, Macedonia, Turkey (twice), India, Algeria, Iran, Pakistan and Sumatra.
