Motorcyclists in A21 accident

Two motorcyclists and two cars were involved in a serious accident on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon on the Tonbridge to Sevenoaks stretch of the A21. One of the two motorcyclists suffered serious multiple injuries whilst the other suffered leg injuries, none of the car occupants were hurt.

Tony Kemp, an Immediate care nurse from SIMCAS (South East Coast Immediate Care Scheme) attended and cared for the more seriously injured patient and then assisted in her ongoing care working alongside the medical team from the Kent Air Ambulance, the Ambulance Service and Kent Fire Brigade. Tony said ‘this was a very serious accident and the tremendous teamwork from all services attending was key to the high quality care delivered to both patients.’

The more seriously injured patient was transferred by air ambulance to the Royal London Hospital whilst the other patient was transported by road ambulance to the Kent and Sussex Hospital in Tunbridge Wells.

Tony also commented on the behaviour of a small number of motor cyclists whose antics delayed both himself and a fire engine; ‘our response is always dependant on the courtesy of other road users who give us priority and in this instance a small group of five or six motorcyclists refused to move aside despite many other motorcyclists and cars doing so.’ As well as slowing Tony’s response they repeated the same antics in front of a fire engine with two of the motorcyclists colliding and blocking the road completely for a short while; neither of the riders were injured.

The A21 remained closed for a number of hours after the accident with trapped vehicles being turned around and taken off the dual carriage-way onto alternative routes.
