27.11.10 Baby dies in Birmingham RTC

A baby has died and two adults have been seriously injured after a RTC in Sandwell last night.

The incident occurred at the junction of Grove Lane and Painters Corner, Smethwick at around 6.05pm.  Five Ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, a BASICS Doctor and an Incident Support Officer attended the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival at the scene, crews found two cars that had been in a significant collision.

“A baby boy travelling in one car suffered multiple serious injuries and received emergency treatment at the scene.  The child was transferred by ambulance on blue lights to Birmingham Children’s Hospital whilst receiving further emergency treatment.   The hospital had been pre alerted to the childs arrival and his serious injuries and a trauma team were on standby.

“Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of ambulance crews and hospital staff, nothing could be done to save the child, and he was confirmed dead shortly after arriving at hospital.

“A man and a woman travelling in the same car suffered multiple serious injuries in the crash and were treated at the scene.  Both were transferred by ambulances to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for further emergency treatment.

“Two other people travelling in the car, a man and a woman, suffered multiple minor injuries and were treated at the scene.  Both were transferred by separate ambulances to City Hospital for further assessment and treatment.

“No other person at the scene was injured in the crash.”
