Motorcycle crash in Grantham

At about 21.30hrs on Wednesday 14th April, Dr Kiki Steel and Nurse Tim Nuttall of LIVES were called to a collision between a car and motorcycle in Grantham.  The motorcyclist had sustained a grossly deformed fractured left lower leg with loss of circulation to his foot.  The ambulance crew on scene were having difficulty loading the patient for transport as he was in severe pain.  As he was very cold it was impossible to administer intravenous pain relief because it was impossible to find a vein.

After insertion of a Intraosseous needle and the administration of Ketamine by Dr Steel, the team were able to straighten the leg re-establishing the circulation and thus saving his leg from potential amputation due to gangerine.

With the assistance of members of Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Service, who were returning from another job and had stopped to assist, the team transferred the patient to a spinal board and transported him to Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham.

On arrival the patient was pain free and blood circulation to his foot had returned to normal.
