Elderly women trapped in Bournemouth crash 21.08.09

TWO elderly women were rushed to hospital after being cut from the wreckage of their overturned car near the Castlepoint shopping centre yesterday.

A 62-year-old Weymouth woman and her 76-year-old passenger were taken to Poole Hospital after being freed by fire crews from a grey Renault Scenic.

Eyewitness Jon Parham, 37, a breakdown mechanic with Fernside Recovery, said the accident happened near the roundabout outside the shopping centre, almost directly in front of his flat, at about 12.40pm.

He said: “I was sat on my balcony having lunch when I heard a big crash and looked out. There was a grinding sound and I saw the Renault on its roof on a pedestrian island.

“It was lucky no-one was crossing the road.”

Paramedics were first on the scene, he added, with an ambulance arriving just four minutes after the collision.

Six police cars, including two cars from the traffic unit, two fire engines, a second ambulance, a paramedic car and a doctor joined the paramedics at the scene within minutes, said Mr Parham.
